What Are the Different Types of Timeshares That Exist Today?
There’s a reason why the United States timeshare industry is worth an estimated $10.5 billion. For many people, timeshares are the most affordable way to continually vacation in the areas they love.
However, one of the most common timeshare myths is that there is only one type of fixed week model. The reality is that there are a variety of different types of timeshares that you can invest in.
In this article, we’ll briefly go over them. That way, you can decide which type is right for you.
Fixed Week Timeshares
In the past, almost all timeshares were in a fixed week model. This type of deeded arrangement provides you with the same week every year at the same “home” resort.
While popular for a time, this model was quite rigid in terms of where and when you can travel.
Floating Week Timeshares
Floating week timeshares are similar to fixed week timeshares in that you have a home resort where you have to stay. However, they give you a bit more freedom with scheduling your vacation.
Instead of a fixed week of the year, you’re assigned a certain season (typically a seventeen-week segment). You then call your timeshare company and schedule a week in that season.
Some timeshare models also offer floating weeks at multiple resorts.
Fractional Timeshares
Fractional timeshares also work on a home resort timeshare ownership model. The difference between it and fixed week ones is that the segments of time are much longer.
With this model, you get access to the timeshare for four to twelve weeks each year. Because of this extended time, they’re also much more expensive.
Point-Based Timeshares
Since vacationers want more flexible options, many timeshares are shifting to a point-based system. With this type of system, you earn vacation points which you can then use to book a vacation at any resort in the vacation club.
This point-based model was popularized by Disney Vacation Club (or DVC).
These are some of the best timeshares because they give you more freedom to book shorter trips at multiple locations or one long one at whatever resort you love. It’s also much easier to sell your DVC instantly than other timeshares.
