3 Dangers of EMF Exposure and How to Block It

Have you heard of EMF exposure? Are you worried about whether electromagnetic radiation is dangerous?

Electric and magnetic fields (EMFs) exist around electrical devices such as computers, cell phones, microwaves, power lines, and electrical wiring. In other words, the sources of EMFs are everywhere, but many people worry about the dangers of EMF.

Here are three science-backed dangers of EMF, as well as tips for limiting exposure.

1. High-Frequency EMFs Can Damage DNA

EMFs are usually grouped into two categories: ionizing and non-ionizing. Ionizing EMFs are a type of high-level radiation that has the potential to damage cells and DNA. Non-ionizing EMFs are usually considered harmless to humans.

Ionizing or high-frequency EMFs include ultraviolet (UV) radiation, gamma rays, and x-rays. Prolonged exposure can prove dangerous, and many people worry about EMF exposure and the link to cancer.

Our exposure to ionizing radiation is on the rise. We receive small doses of it from the sun’s rays and from the soil and water. However, increased medical imaging, such as CT scans, contributes to the radiation exposure totals.

Unfortunately, we don’t have much data on the effects of ionizing radiation. Most of these studies involve survivors of the 1945 atomic bomb blasts. This isn’t a perfect model to study as all radiation was released at once from the bomb, rather than over a prolonged length of time.

Studies of the Hiroshima survivors revealed a slightly increased risk of cancer. The participants of the study were exposed to less than 50 mSv of radiation. This is an amount equal to three CT scans or more.

2. Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Symptoms

Some people believe they’re allergic to electromagnetic radiation, and being exposed to the various sources of EMFs leads to certain symptoms.

More studies are necessary; however, people with electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) say EMFs cause symptoms such as:

  • Headaches
  • Tingling
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Appetite loss and weight loss
  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Nausea
  • Depression
  • Dysesthesia

In some instances, these symptoms may interfere with daily life.

3. Possibly Carcinogenic

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the WHO, radiofrequency electromagnetic fields may possibly prove carcinogenic to humans. This is based on the understanding that cellphone use may cause an increased risk of glioma, a type of brain cancer.

This evaluation is from 2011, so more recent research is necessary to study these connections.

The possible dangers of exposure to electromagnetic fields is one reason people search for ways to limit their exposure. If you’re interested in finding and blocking EMFs, the right equipment can help. This TriField EMF meter can help you take fast and accurate measurements.

There are also ways to block EMFs. These include EMF-blocking clothing, fabrics, and paints designed to protect you from low-frequency electric fields.

Are You Worried About the Dangers of EMF?

If you’re concerned about the dangers of EMF, there are steps you can take to measure your exposure and block some electric fields. Buy the right equipment and safety gear if you feel it’s a concern.
