Understand Lifeguard Duties
Lifeguards are rescuers who supervise people in, on, or near water. Their first responsibility is monitoring bathers and minimizing risks. They do this by enforcing safety rules and calling out any irresponsible behavior.
Lifeguards are also trained to recognize and respond to emergencies. Knowing the signs of a struggling swimmer allows lifeguards to make split-second decisions and preserve at-risk lives.
Often, teams of lifeguards will coordinate to tackle situations in the most efficient way possible. In an emergency, lifeguards use their strong swimming skills to bring stricken bathers back to shore and give first aid.
Decide What Type of Lifeguard to Be
Lifeguards can work in various venues, including swimming pools, beaches, lakes, and rivers. Depending on where they work, they may require specific training to protect the people under their supervision effectively.
For example, a lifeguard at a beach requires an understanding of tidal patterns and signs, plus proficiency with ATVs or waterborne vehicles. They may also need to learn about and carry the equipment for treating jellyfish stings.
Conversely, a lifeguard working at a community pool will be trained in shallow water skills. Job-specific training allows lifeguards to provide a comprehensive and targeted service to bathers.
Complete Lifeguard Training
The first step to becoming a lifeguard is enrolling in an accredited lifeguard certification course. You can also give yourself a headstart by completing water safety training online.
