Water Lifeguards Working Behind The Scenes on Small Beaches

Perfectly fitted bathing suits covering tanned and trained bodies. A buoy over the shoulder and a whistle hanging from the neck. The atmosphere of hot holidays and dozens of undressed women basking on the beach. Sorry, in my childhood I really went overboard with “Sun Patrol.”
The detainees “guarded” the safety of people swimming in the reservoir in Skorzęcin near Gniezno. Their nonchalance met with much criticism. And rightly so, because scrolling, matching or playing in “Beach Lifeguard Rescue” could end in someone’s tragedy.
I think that for many people of my generation, “Sunny Patrol” was the first idea of a lifeguard’s work. In Poland, it was certainly easier to believe that CJ Parker would get us out of the water than that hospitals would operate as in “Emergency Room”. Or that someday we will have “Friends”.
– Rescue is a very nice job with Lifeguard Course, until nothing happens – the conversation is quickly brought to the ground floor by Bartek, a rescuer from a lagoon in central Poland. “One guy drowned himself drunk here last year.” My buddies, rescuers are still dragged around the courts – he adds.- Work comes down to sitting all day and looking at the water. This is not a large center, but rather a province in the middle of Poland – says rescuer Kuba. – It is known that there are times when you need to jump into the water and help someone. It happens once a week in small places. At the seaside, where the water is less predictable, probably more often, he estimates.
Looking at the water
Rescuers from Skorzęcin did not even manage to observe the water. Perhaps they too fell victim to screen fiction. Surely you’ve seen it – the guest falls from the pier into the water, of course he can’t swim. He melts while screaming out loud – RAATUUUNKU! HELP! – and other similar phrases that instantly draw the attention of rescuers.
My dear, it is not so.
– There is one scream. Then the victim “grabs the mug” in the throat, throws his hands up and disappears. People drown in silence – explains Bartek. – I always try to observe the situation well in advance. When someone was lying on their back, I did not look what would happen next, I only took the buoy and ran to him – he says.
Sailing for life
It is not half a month yet, and 67 people have already drowned. Only on Black Saturday, August 4, the water took 14 people. Such data can be read from police statistics . In the previous month, 75 people died under water.
This police chart is one of the scariest and gloomiest things you can see on the internet. In just a few hours it will be out of date, in a few days the number will increase by another several (a dozen) people.
Unfortunately, in many cases the cause of death is thoughtlessness, stupid defiance, or intoxication with alcohol or other substances.
– Most often we have to save the drunk or those who ignored the warnings – says Szymon, a senior rescuer from the Baltic Sea , onTemat . – Usually such people do not care that there is a red flag – he complains.- This year I jumped into the water twice to help someone swim to the shore – says Bartek. – I did not have to revive anyone, it was without a tragedy. In my entire 15-year service, I never had a situation where I had to “pump” someone – he adds.
You can earn
Earnings around three thousand zlotys net may impress young people, but when we add to the fact that you work seven days a week for eight hours, the spell is slightly broken.
– A person with no experience, let’s say for the first time at a given rate, earns purely about three thousand zlotys net – says Szymon. – Someone coming to the Baltic Sea for the second or third time has about PLN 3,200. The elder of the tower, having two rescuers under him – as I am now – collects PLN 3,700 per hand. I am here for the seventh season – he says.
The working day of a lifeguard on the Baltic Sea starts before 10 am, from the morning check-in. Lasts until 18. Then comes the labyrinth. – You know, we are at the Baltic Sea. After 6 p.m. we are practically on vacation. We meet, party. Rather calm, although there are some strong melange people. As everywhere – says Szymon.
Would you entrust your life to an 18-year-old?
The age limit – 18 years is enough to start working as a lifeguard. It used to be that you could throw on your orange shorts and patrol the beach before six o’clock. – It was like that a few years ago. Then it changed. I also found the earlier formula – says Szymon.
Is the 18-year-old aware of the consequences of his behavior enough to entrust him with his own life? And most of all, enough strength? May. However, you can find more puzzling stories on the internet. A story appeared in the Trench, described by a girl whose friend became a lifeguard at the swimming pool, even though … she cannot swim.
“Look, they run such courses at our swimming pool all the time. They needed a lifeguard for a large swimming pool quickly, so I applied. I paid 450 zlotys and in two weeks they gave me a certificate. Starting tomorrow, I will start working in the large swimming pool, there will be extra money!
– But you can’t swim!
– I know, but I stay a bit afloat already. We don’t have a lot of traffic at the swimming pool, practically only school groups, and the kids swim with these noodles, so what can happen to them? “- we could read in the history.
Added to this is the problem of alcohol. After all, a lifeguard who cannot deny himself a dozen deeper ones the day before, can be a much greater threat than smartphone guys.
– Probably somewhere on the Baltic Sea it happens that some rescuers throw a sharp melange – says Bartek. This is idiot. If, in this case, someone drowns during your shift, you will feel remorse and the prosecutor will warn you – our interlocutor warns.
Basic pre-medical first aid course
The Basic Pre-Medical First Aid / DAN Basic Life Support (BLS) course
teaches not only how to conduct CPR, but how to prevent the
victim from being in this condition. For example, hemorrhages or shock
can lead to serious problems with breathing and circulation.
Oxygen first aid in diving accidents
This course is an introductory level training in oxygen first aid for
diving accidents. It is aimed at divers and those who, due to their profession,
may meet injured divers (boat crew, water rescue groups, diving base staff).
At the professional level (divemaster, instructor), this course is absolutely essential.
The aim of the course is to teach first aid methods for diving injuries
(decompression sickness, arterial gas embolism, flooding).
Advanced oxygen first aid in diving accidents
The Medical Oxygen Rebreather (MO2R) is designed to deliver
high concentrations of oxygen to a casualty for up to eight hours using only a small oxygen cylinder.
This is a great advantage for the conscious and breathing injured diver, allowing him to constantly
breathe oxygen in the event of a long distance to a medical facility or delays in transport.
In the DAN MO2R course, DAN Oxygen Rescuers will learn when it is appropriate to use
the Medical Oxygen Rebreather and how to assemble and use it.
With the Medical Oxygen Rebreather and trained divers,
diving in remote locations will be safer than ever.
First aid oxygen in water accidents
This course teaches the provision of oxygen assistance to flood victims.
It is not the intention of the course to teach oxygen to injured divers.
The course is intended for lifeguards and other water professionals.
Medical oxygen rebreather
The Medical Oxygen Rebreather (MO2R) is designed to deliver
high concentrations of oxygen to a casualty for up to eight hours using only a small oxygen cylinder.
This is a big advantage for a conscious and breathing injured diver allowing him to keep going
breathe oxygen in the event of a long distance to a medical facility or delays in transport.
In the DAN MO2R course, DAN Oxygen Rescuers will learn when it is appropriate to use
the Medical Oxygen Rebreather and how to assemble and use it.
