The Secret to Removing Pet Stains on Carpet

The Secret to Removing Pet Stains on Carpet

About 70% of US households have pets! Is your household one of them?

You love your furry friend(s), but sometimes, they can cause annoying messes. They don’t know any better, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not frustrating when you get pet stains on your carpet!

Don’t panic. Pet stains aren’t that difficult to remove, especially if you catch them early. We’re here to talk about a few potential methods that can help.

Read on to learn more.

First: Try to Catch Them Immediately

This is probably the best piece of advice that anyone can give you when it comes to getting rid of any kind of stains (pet stains or otherwise).

The best way to prevent carpet stains is to get rid of the mess before it has time to set in. If you can manage this, it will be far easier to clean up even if there’s still some residue left over.

If not, you may struggle to even find the stain in the first place (which can be a problem with urine stains on dark carpets).

As soon as you notice that your pet has made a mess on your carpet, get rid of it. When it comes to vomit or any other kind of solid waste, pick it up and throw it away before blotting the remaining stain.

With pet urine or any other liquid messes, start by blotting. You can use a dry towel to start and then switch to a damp towel once you’ve picked up most of it.

If you don’t catch messes immediately, don’t worry. You can still remove them, but it may not be as quick. Blot with warm water and remove any solid mess.

Once you’re done with this step, move on to one of the following methods to continue getting rid of the mess and odor.

Method One: Vinegar and Baking Soda

Everyone who’s ever tried to clean without cleaning products at home knows that vinegar and baking soda make up a dream team. They’re not perfect for every mess, but you’ll be surprised at how much you can do with this combination that you likely already have in your kitchen.

Mix together 50% water and 50% vinegar in a spray bottle. Saturate the stain and leave the solution on the carpet for about five to ten minutes.

Blot the solution but leave the area damp. Sprinkle baking soda on the damp area and scrub it into the stain with a scrub brush.

You should try to leave the baking soda in place until it’s dry. Then, run a vacuum over the area to get rid of the leftover powder.

It’s helpful to leave your windows open during this process so you can air out the room. The vinegar smell will fade, but it may be unpleasant while you’re spending time indoors.

Method Two: Vinegar, Baking Soda, Dish Soap, and Peroxide

If you have a stubborn stain, you can add more helpful cleaning products into the mix to get rid of it.

Put equal parts vinegar, water, and hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle. Add a few squirts of dish soap and about a tablespoon of baking soda. This isn’t an exact science, so you may have to use trial and error to figure out what will work best for your specific stain.

Some people find that they need extra baking soda or dish soap. You will only use this solution once, so don’t add more liquids than you think you’ll be able to use for this stain.

Spray the stain with this mixture after shaking it gently. Let it sit for a few minutes and then use a scrub brush before blotting it with water.

Once the area is dry, use a vacuum to get rid of any residual powder. If possible, a steam cleaner is a better option just to make sure you get rid of any soap residue.

Peroxide may discolor certain carpets, so keep that in mind.

Method Three: Vodka

This method isn’t as well-known, and again, it might damage carpets. That said, if you have a bottle of vodka hanging around and a pesky stain that won’t go away, give it a try!

Vodka is effective for killing odors. Note that your carpet will still smell like vodka, so again, it’s best to leave the windows open while you do this and consider using a steam cleaner later.

Use 50% vodka and 50% water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture onto the stain and let it sit for about 15 minutes before blotting it up with a cloth. It’s that simple!

When in Doubt: Hire a Professional

So what if you have a fancy plush carpet, or if you’ve already tried removing the stain and it just won’t go away?

We’ve all been there. In that case, it might be best to hire a professional so you don’t risk damaging your carpet. Professional cleaners like Cleanville carpet and rug cleaning experts can get your carpet so clean that it looks like you don’t have pets at all.

Let someone else deal with your pesky pet stains so you don’t have to.
