5 Things About Opening a Store That Nobody Tells You

According to research, the revenue from retail sales in 2020 hit $4.06 trillion.

Opening your own store is a massive undertaking –  it’s not like starting a blog or an online business. There are so many factors to consider, from the cost of rent to the amount of inventory you’ll need to carry.

If you’d like to learn more about the specifics of opening your own store, keep reading for our list of 5 business tips about opening a store that nobody tells you.

1. The Biggest Investment of Your Life Doesn’t End There

Owning a shop is often an incredibly pricey business; even if it doesn’t feel like it at first glance. There will always be new equipment to buy, repairs that need doing (and someone else to do) like decorations that need to be made.

And of course, the more expensive aspects like rent (especially in downtown areas) and wages/salaries. Click for more information.

2. You’ll Have To Be A Salesperson… Even When It’s Not Sale Time

There are always new customers coming into your retail store. Not only that, but they’ll want you to show them everything your shop has got!

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that just because it isn’t sale time that there is no work involved in being a retailer – people still have money to spend, after all!

Remember: business may die during the summer months for most shops, but if it isn’t done right then it could kill you come autumn when things pick up.

3. Don’t Forget About The Small Details

A shop is a business, and as such it must have business cards. These aren’t just for you to send out to interested parties.

They also give you something to hand over whenever somebody asks “where did you get that?” or “can I buy this from somewhere else?” – these are the little details that make all the difference.

They show a willingness to help, and can often lead to more sales.

4. Market Research Is Important!

Before opening up your store, you must do as much market research as possible. Check what items other stores carry within your area (and even outside of it).

Don’t be afraid to ask how they’re doing things at their shop compared to yours. Don’t forget to look at how your competition does things, and think of ways you can do it better than them!

5. Not Everyone Will Like You… And That’s Okay

Not everybody will like you or your store. That’s just a fact we have to accept when running our own business.

While it may hurt to hear somebody say they won’t shop with us, we mustn’t get too angry about their comments – sometimes people are just difficult to please!

Instead, encourage constructive criticism from customers – this way you can see what people want, instead of merely guessing.
