Designer Feature: Alice McCall
Alice McCall is an iconic Australian fashion designer who launched her brand at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in 2004. In 2009, she launched an online store and in recent years has focused on expanding her business into overseas markets. Unfortunately Alice McCall has had to appoint administrators as COVID-19 has created financial stresses on the business. With the closure of eight of it’s twelve stores, Style Theory has your favourite Alice Mccall dress hire available for your next special event.
Alice McCall was born in London and her career in London’s fashion scene. McCall started out as a stylist for celebrities including Blondie, Kelish and Faithful. She has worked with major international brands including Rimmel, Nike and Levi’s. During this time as a stylist she worked with major fashion magazines including Dazed & Confused and I-D magazine.
During this time she was also selling 1950s vintage clothing and silk dresses which became incredibly popular. Alice McCall’s career drastically changed when supermodel Kate Moss wore one of her designs. McCall was shortly hunted down by Buddist Punk who was a high-end streetwear label and ended up designing her first collection for them. Her first Spring Summer collection became a wild success across the globe. When she was on holidays in Ibiza she met Australian designers Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton who were the co-founders and designers of Australian cult favourite brand Sass and Bide. They offered her a job so she came to Australia to work for them.
In 2004 McCall launched her own label at Australian Fashion Week and she quickly became a national success. Alice has also shown her collections in New York and London fashion weeks. Alice has not only had stores across Australia but also in the UK, US, Middle East and Asia. She launched her e-commerce store which became equally as successful. She partnered with Australian retail giant David Jones as her official retailer.
Alice McCall’s collections have evolved throughout the years, however she has always been who the modern day woman is and what she wants. McCall’s collections include dresses, jumpsuits, tops, bottoms, jackets, knitwear, leather pieces and denim. Her feminine designs are soft and romantic juxtaposed with strength and sexiness.
She has dressed some of the biggest stars in the world including Diana Kruger, Gemma Ward, Mischa Barton, Elle Macpherson, Mandy Moore and Natalia Vodianova, just to name a few.
Alice McCall has collaborated with a range of brands over the years. Her most successful was with Target when she created a diffusion line which was quickly sold out after it launched. She also partnered with General Pants and UK giant Topshop. Her two collections of nine pieces she designed for Topshop were hugely successful.
