ECT is introduced in the 1990s when shipping on pallets and cartons stacking became a common part of the international supply chain.   1. Bursting Strength Test (BST)

The burst strength test or the Mullen test is similar to the ECT since both the tests are used to evaluate the strength of cardboard or carton materials. Both the ECT and BST are widely recommended lab tests for packaging materials.

However, importers are not bound to use ECT and BST because their results are different. Bursting strength is the amount of force needed to burst a packaging material or carton. In this test, force is applied on the flat side of the material.

BST is among older testings offering more general reports of strength. For importers, the bursting strength test is more helpful due to their rough shipment handling. The test is performed with the help of bursting strength tester or Mullen tester.

  1. PRT or Puncture Resistance Test

Shipping doesn’t imply delivering the product only. It also includes handling. More than six people at logistics handle a parcel before its final delivery to the customer. Carton boxes are prone to puncture during mishandling by any factory staff. The surface of the box cannot protect itself from the sharp edges of a truck, corner of another box, or even a sharp product inside the box.

Moreover, the product in the shipment might get some extra shocks and vibration if it is traveling through less developed countries.

Vibration tests can be used to assess the packaging performance- whether it will protect the product from shocks and vibration or not. Professionals test this with a vibration table or shaker. This test can be performed on any type of material containers. There are repetitive vertical motion shock tests, repetitive rotary motion shock tests, palletized load tests, and single container resonance tests.

  1. Compression test

The compression test for packaging material helps in evaluating the stuff. In this test, force is applied to the container’s face, to corners, or to diagonally opposite edges. This same standard can be also applied to evaluate other different materials other than carton like pails, tubs, bottles, drums, etc.

The purpose of the compression test is to measure the container’s ability to resist applied external compressive loads. This is performed with fixed or swiveled-platen type compression testing devices.
